Abstract

1,190,566. Aerials. POST OFFICE. 3 July, 1967 [4 July, 1966], No. 29956/66. Heading H4A. An aerial system comprises a concave main reflector 1 which is symmetrical about the axis of its generating curve, a primary feed device 3 which is offset from the said axis, and a subreflector 2 intersecting and the said axis which directs received radiation from the main reflector to the feed device. The generating curve of the main reflector 1 may be a parabola, and the sub. reflector 2 may be part of an hyperboloid of revolution having one focus f 1 coincident with the focus F of the said parabola, and the other focus # 2 coincident with the phase centre of the feed device 3, which may be an electromagnetic horn. The sub-reflector 2 is supported from the main reflector 1 by members 4, and the system is rotatable about an elevation axis carried by a platform 5, said platform being rotatable about an azimuth axis. The feed device 3 is coupled by a waveguide 6 to a receiver 7 inside a cabin 11 on the platform 5, said cabin also containing an elevation motor 9 and other equipment. The elevation axis of the system may pass through the receiver 7 and the axis of the hyperboloidal sub-reflector 2. The periphery of the mouth of the primary feed device may be arranged to lie in the surface of the main reflector. More than one primary feed device may be provided, said feed device phase centres being disposed on the circle of rotation about the axis of the main reflector by the said other focus of the sub-reflector. The description includes formulµ for determining the shape and the size of the sub-reflector.
