Abstract

1,042,258. Telescope mountings; programmed electric control. MINISTER OF AVIATION. Nov. 25, 1964 [Dec. 4.1963], No. 47902/63. Headings G2J and G3N. [Also in Divisions F4, H3 and H4] A rotatable mounting suitable for a directional apparatus, such as a tracking aerial, or a searchlight, or a telescope, comprises two turntables, one of which is mounted upon the other, with their axes mutually inclined at an acute angle, and means for rotationally driving each turntable independently. As described, a structure 5 having a substantially triangular side elevation is supported on a base 6 by a turntable 7 and is rotatable about a vertical axis A. A structure 4 is supported on the structure 5 by a turntable 8 and is rotatable about an axis B which is inclined at 45 degrees to the vertical. An aerial is mounted on the structure 4, with its axis at 45 degrees to the axis B. With this arrangement, the axis of the aerial may be directed from 0‹ to 90 degrees elevation on any bearing (Figs. 2, 5 not shown). A Cassegrain type aerial may be used, with a paraboloidal main reflector 1, an hyperboloidal secondary reflector 2, and a horn 3 and it may feed receiving apparatus 10 comprising a vacuum flask 11, containing liquid refrigerant 20, which is mounted with its axis parallel to axis B. The aerial being counterbalanced by a weight 12. Alternatively, the secondary reflector 2 may be omitted and part of the receiving apparatus 10 including the flask 11 and the horn 3 may be mounted at the focus of the reflector 1. The turntables may comprise driving motors M1, M2 and digital position indicators P1, P2. The axis of the aerial may be directed according to a programme, for example, for satellite tracking, by feeding instructions from a tape reader T1, Fig. 6 (not shown) to comparators C1, C2 which are also connected to the digital position indicators P1, P2 and the driving motors M1, M2. In a modification, a mobile base 15, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) with wheels 17, stabilizing beams 18 and retractable feet 19 is provided and the mounting as described above is supported upon it by a further structure 13 associated with a turntable 16 with its axis at 45 degrees to the vertical, which allows the aerial to be stowed for transit in a position of minimum headroom.
