Abstract

1,094,424. Aerials. COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE CORPORATION. Oct. 24, 1966 [Dec. 8, 1965], No. 47642/66. Heading H4A. In a spin-stabilized artificial satellite 10 an aerial system comprising a central rod aerial 13 with a parabolic cylinder reflector 14 is mounted on a de-spun platform 11 carried on low-friction bearings 12, the said reflector being held in its active position (Fig. 1) by means of a spring-biased hinge 16. Should the de-spinning motor stop, so that the platform 11 rotates with the rest of the satellite, centrifugal force will overcome the biasing of the hinge 16, and the reflector 14 will tilt away from the aerial 13 (Fig. 2). The radiation pattern will change from a pencil beam directed to a particular earth station, to an omni-directional mode. An R.F. transparent cylinder 15, made for example of glass fibre reinforced plastics material, may be provided opposite the reflector 14, and be similarly hinged. In a second embodiment, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the reflector is constituted by a number of flexible metallic wires (17), made for example of beryllium-copper, mounted on the de-spun platform and having opposite them a number of flexible R.F. transparent wires (18). In a third embodiment, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the reflector is constituted by a number of flexible metallic petals (19) which are biased in the active position against an R.F. transparent cylinder (20).
