Abstract
714,135. Radio aerials. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Nov. 17, 1952 [Nov. 23, 1951], No. 29022/52. Class 40 (7) A pedestal for a radar search aerial permits the aerial to be rotated continuously in azimuth and selectively tilted during rotation to any desired angle of elevation. The aerial, Fig. 1 (not shown), comprises a reflector with a horn feed and is pivoted on the rotatable top plate 19 of the pedestal in two hinge members 14 (only one of which is shown in the drawing) so as to be tilted by the operation of a jack assembly 15 engaging a mounting flange 9 on the base of the reflector. Plate 19 is secured to the inside races of thrust bearings 21, the outer parts of which are secured to the stationary part 22 of the pedestal, and is rotated by motor-driven geared shaft 46 engaging ring gear 24. The stationary portion 22 carries two further ring gears 43, 44 for controlling the antenna tilt. Gear 43 is fixedly secured to part 22 and gear 44 is rotatable by motor-driven geared shaft 45. An extension 50 on the shaft permits manual adjustment of tilt. Engaging ring gears 43 and 44 are the input gears 47 and 48 of a differential gear assembly 47, 48, 49, 51, 39 the output gear 39 of which drives the screw 31 of the jack assembly through a ball and socket coupling 29, 30. Normally both of the ring gears are held stationary so that due to the differential action, output gear 39 also remains stationary with respect to its own axis as the top plate assembly rotates. When, however, motion is imparted to gear 44 by rotation of shaft 45 the change in the relative motion between the input gears of the differential is such that gear 39 is rotated and the aerial tilted. A rotary waveguide joint for use with the assembly is described in Specification 714,136, [Group XL(b)].
