Abstract

The invention comprises dyestuffs of formula <FORM:0789126/IV (b)/1> where R is a residue of a coupling component free of sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups and bearing a hydroxy group ortho to the azo link and R1 and R2 are acyl groups and heavy metal complexes thereof. The metal free dyestuffs are made by coupling a diazo compound of an appropriate 1 - amino - 2 - hydroxy - 3,5 - bis-acylaminobenzene in alkaline to neutral medium with the desired coupling component. Metallization is effected in conventional fashion in substance, in the dye bath or on the fibre. Cobalt and chromium compounds are mentioned, the latter being preferred. Metallization may be effected in admixture with metallizable monoazo-dyestuffs. Specified acyl groups are acetyl, formyl, chloro-acetyl, propionyl and methane-sulphonyl groups. Specified coupling components are 1- and 2-naphthol, 1-acetyl-, -benzoyl- and -methane-sulphonylamino-7-naphthol, 2 - naphthol - 6 - sulphonamide, 1 - phenyl - 3 - methyl - 5 - pyrazolone and acetoacetic-anilide. The dyestuffs and metal complexes dye wool and other animal materials, e.g. silk and leather. Examples are provided in which diazotized 1 - amino - 2 - hydroxy - 3,5 - bis - acetyl - aminobenzene is coupled with certain of the above-specified azo components and additionally 1-(21-chloro- and 21,41 - dichloro - benzoylamino) - 7 - naphthol to give dyes which metallized with chromium or cobalt yield dyeings on wool in blue, green, grey or red-brown shades.
