Abstract

A die for stamping sheet-metal parts such as automobile roof-panels comprises a metal base member 6 having secured thereto a metal insert member 8 which provides a wear-resistant surface 10 around the periphery of the die and a hardened polymeric material 12 which forms the inner surface 14 of the die. The polymeric material 12 may consist of about 100 parts by weight of epoxy resin, about 250 parts by weight of Portland cement and about 10 parts by weight of catalyst, e.g. diethylene triamine. The material is bonded to the base member 6 by means of an intermediate resin layer 18 consisting of about 100 parts by weight of epoxy <PICT:0789094/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0789094/IV (a)/2> resin, about 50 parts by weight of silica flour and about 25 parts by weight of diethylene triamine. An epoxy resin consisting of a condensation product of epichlorohydrin with bisphenol or glycerol is preferred. Headed pins 16 assist in maintaining the polymeric material in place on the base member. The thickness of the material should be between 1 and 1.5 inches and any portions of the die requiring a greater depth of material are built up with fibre-glass matting impregnated with the polymeric material. In making the die a plaster-cast 19 coated with wax paste and powdered mica is fixed to the die assembly and the polymeric material is inserted through a spout 20 and allowed to cure for about 30 to 40 hours. Fig. 4 shows a punching and stamping die for vehicle roof sections containing the rear window opening. Steel inserts 24 and 26 are provided, the former forming the cutting or punching edge 28 for the window opening and the latter forming the die periphery.
