788,797. Discharging vertical retorts. SCOTTISH OILS, Ltd., and STEWART, D. Jan. 11, 1956 [Jan. 17, 1955], No. 1367/55. Class 51 (2). [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for discharging a vertical shale retort or hopper of reactangular cross-section comprises serrated rollers 5 and 6 driven so that roller 5 rotates anti-clockwise and roller 6 rotates clockwise, spent shale channelledover the rollers by side-plates 19 and louvres 22 and 25, being discharged between said rollers and the side walls 10 and 11. An inverted V-shaped baffle having sloping side surfaces 13 and 14 defining a central slot, and sloping triangular end surfaces, is supported by bars 18 attached to the plates 19, providing a ridge over the line of symmetry of the rollers. Gas inlet ports 23 protected by deflectors 24 are disposed behind the louvres.
