Abstract

788,741. Waterproofing leather. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 9, 1955 [April 6, 1955], No. 10034/55. Class 140. A process of treating leather comprises introducing into a leather in the presence of a watersoluble zirconium salt an organo-polysiloxane from an aqueous emulsion thereof containing a water-soluble soap and then treating the leather with a solution of a water-soluble aluminium salt. Specified soaps are ammonium oleate, potassium stearate or sodium palmitate. A specified polysiloxane is methyl polysiloxane. A specified zirconium salt is zirconium acetate. Specified aluminium salts are aluminium sulphate and potash alum. Examples describe the treatment of leather skins by drumming them with an aqueous emulsion of methyl polysiloxane containing zirconium acetate and a soap followed by treatment with a solution of aluminium sulphate or potash alum.
