Abstract

A foamed resin having a density of less than 50 pounds per cubic foot may be made by heating a composition consisting essentially of from 15 to 75 parts by weight of powdered aluminium per 100 parts of an alkyl polysiloxane resin having an average of from 1 to 1.6 total alkyl radicals containing less than 3 carbon atoms and phenyl radicals per silicon atom, a blowing agent and desirably a curing catalyst, at a temperature, e.g. from 30 DEG to 300 DEG C., sufficient to cause foaming of the resin and curing thereof. Blowing agents specified are sodium bicarbonate, p,p1-oxy-bis-(benzenesulphonylhydrazide), dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine, methylhydrogensiloxane and ethylhydrogensiloxane, these last two compounds being used in conjunction with a hydroxylated compound such as butanol or a silanol as described in Specification 788,598. Catalysts specified are dibutyl-tin-diacetate, lead 2-ethylhexoate, amines, alkali metal hydroxides, ferric chloride, and quaternary ammonium salts. In examples, foamed resins are made by heating specific siloxanes with aluminium powder, dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine and 2-ethylhexoic acid and with or without diatomaceous earth.
