Abstract

Polyoxymethylene is stabilised by reaction with a vinyl ether of formula: <FORM:0956419/C3/1> where R is an alkyl or aryl group, R1 is a hydrogen, alkyl or aryl group, and R11 is a hydrogen, alkyl, aryl halogen or alkoxyl group. Specified ethers include vinyl -nbutyl ether, vinyl isobutyl ether, vinyl methyl ether, divinyl ether, and vinyl hexyl ether, vinyl methacryl ether, vinyl alphanaphthyl ether, vinyl beta-diethyl-amino-ethyl ether, benzyl vinyl ether, and phenyl vinyl ether. The reaction is preferably carried out by treating polyoxymethylene in a liquid or vapour containing the ether and possibly a catalyst. Specified solvents are dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, ether, dimethylformamide and phenol while boron fluoride, ferric chloride, aluminium chloride, hydrochloric acid, p-toluene sulphonic acid, trimethylamine, benzyl amine and pyridine are included in the list of catalysts.
