Abstract
788,581. Helico-centrifugal fans. SOC. D'ETUDES & DE REALISATIONS INDUSTRIELLES (SERI) FOURNIER & MOUILLON. Jan. 31, 1956 [Feb. 24, 1955], No. 3124/56. Class 110 (1). A fan comprises an impeller having helical blades inclined in the upstream direction from root to tip and a volute surrounding the blades to collect the fluid delivered therefrom in a direction diverging from the fan axis, the centre line of the volute having a shape similar to that of a conical spiral so that a point moving downstream on this centre line moves axially and radially outwards, while the cross-section of the volute at the point progressively increases. A mine ventilation plant comprises a suction pipe 3, Fig. 1, dividing into two conical branches 4, 5 which may be separately closed by gate valves 6, 7 and which lead to separate fans 1, 2. Each volute 10 or 11 is continued by a substantially vertical delivery duct 8 or 9. The ducts 8, 9 are of increasing cross-sectional area and decreasing curvature, becoming straight and vertical at their outlets, and are supported by a common framework 12, Figs. 1 and 2. Each fan comprises helical blades 13, Fig. 4, inclined in the upstream direction and adjustably pivotally mounted on a conical hub 14 carried by the shaft 15 of a motor 16. The radially outer wall 18 of each volute 10 or 11 is a spiral surface which commences at a point 19 on the intersection of the conical branch 4 or 5 with the conical upstream wall 17 of the volute, and as its radial distance from the fan axis progressively increases, its intersection 20 with the conical wall 17 moves axially away from the impeller. The radially inner wall 21 of the volute forms an extension of the conical surface of the hub 14. The downstream wall 22 of the volute is a helical surface.
