Abstract

788,569. Motor forecarriages driving gear. GENERAL ENGINEERING CO. AKTIEBOLAG. Oct. 11, 1955 [Oct. 14, 1954], No. 28938/55. Classes 79(2) and 79(3) The invention relates to driving mechanism for the single driven steering wheel 3 of a motor truck. According to the invention an axle 15 for the wheel 3 extends removably through a sleeve 14 rigid with a transmission housing 16, a packing member 19 being arranged between the housing 16 and the sleeve 14 so that the axle 15 may be removed for dismantling the wheel 3 while maintaining oil tight the interior of the housing 16. As shown, a driving motor 1 and gear box 2 are mounted on the chassis-frame 5 by means of a ball bearing 4 the housing 16 comprises two laterally spaced walls 16, 17, secured to the base of the gear box 2. The latter is connected to a pinion 9 meshing with a gear 12 rotatably mounted on a bearing 24 carried by the sleeve 14. The gear 12 has an axially extending annular portion 18 which bears on a seal ring 20 carried by the housing portion 17. The other end of the axle 15 is secured by a bolt 23 to a bracket 21 rigid with the gear box 2. The wheel 3 carries axially extending projections 26 which are adapted to engage corresponding recesses formed in the annular portion 18 of the gear wheel 12 to provide a disconnectable torque-transmitting coupling between the wheel 3 and the gear wheel 12. There is sufficient clearance at 28 to permit the wheel 3 being moved axially to disengage the projections 26 and their associated recesses when the wheel is to be dismantled.
