Abstract
788,327. Intake silencers. GENERAL MOTORS, Ltd. June 11, 1956 [June 21, 1955], No. 17893/55. Class 7(2) [Also in Groups XXII and XXVIII] A hollow casing 1, having inlet and outlet openings 8, 15 is divided internally into one or more air conduits 21, 22 and resonance chambers 24 by the mutual abutment of indentations 4, 5 formed in opposed complementary shells 2, 3 which are united at the peripheries thereof to form the casing. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the casing of metal or synthetic plastic material, is generally oval in shape, and the indentations are substantially of horseshoe-shape. Near the rectangular inlet opening 8 transverse indentations 9, 10 form a chamber 11 which is filled with woven wire 12 forming an oil-coated air filter; the latter is retained in position by inturned flanges 14 of the shells. Air flowing through the inlet 8 passes in two streams along the conduits 21, 22, to meet at the opening 23 between the ends of the conduits, into the chamber 24, and, then through the outlet opening 15 in the shell 3. In modifications (a), the chamber 24 is divided into two communicating chambers by further opposed indentations extending transversely between the indentations 4, 5, and (b) there is a single air inlet conduit 221, Figs. 9 and 10, formed bv indentations 204, 205 in the shells. 202, 203.
