Abstract
787,992. Knitting; straight-bar machines. TEXTILE MACHINE WORKS. June 28, 1954 [July 14, 1953], No. 18904/54. Class 74 (2). Gear means provides a positive driving connection between a yarn carried rod and a box frictionally engageable with and driven by a reciprocating friction rod. Each carried rod, say rod 8, bears a rack 77 meshing with a gear 75 on a shaft 72 which also carries a gear 81 meshing with a rack 91 connected to the friction box by a releasable connection 111. The friction box is connected to one or other of low- and high-speed friction rods 130, 127 by friction shoes 131 operated by cams 137, 147 rotatable by a gear 171, acting through pinions 162, 170 (one shown). The gear 171 is carried on a shaft 175 stepped round by a ratchet 186 and a pawl 187 actuated, through linkwork 190, 195, 200 and roller 206, by cams 207 adjustably carried on a bar 210 secured to the slur cam boxes. Each stroke of the cams 207, when operative, advances the ratchet 186 one tooth. One arm 205 of the lever 200 is connected to a rod 226 which is normally so supported by the core of a solenoid 236 that the roller 206 is inoperative, at its highest point: energization of the solenoid removes the support of the core and allows the roller to follow the cams 207. The solenoid circuit is controlled by buttons on a pattern chain 271 advanced, when required, by a ratchet-wheel 276 and a pawl 277, operated by a cam 296 on the machine cam shaft, through a follower 295 on one arm 292 of a lever 282 and a lever 280. An advance of the chain is initiated by an auxiliary pattern chain which shogs a rod 330 to rock a lever 316 a hooked end of which has hitherto trapped the lever 282. When a yarn carrier is not required, its carrier rod is moved by its friction box, to bring the carrier beyond an end of the needle bar and sinker head. The friction box, then disconnected from bath-friction rods, is held there against accidental displacement by interengaging latches, releasable by a cam when necessary. During the layering of selvedge reinforcing yarn in heel and sole parts of a blank, the associated friction box is connected to the slow-speed friction rod and means is provided to stop the friction box also, as the carrier rod engages the stop at each end of its travel. When the full width of the blank is being reinforced, as in the toe, the friction box is connected to the high-speed friction rod and the traverse of the box is correspondingly increased. The traverse of the friction box is determined by the attitude of a stop-engaging lever 360 pivoted at 361 to the friction box housing 105 and controlled by a cam 380. When the friction box is connected to the high-speed friction rod, it is also connected to the usual shock absorber mechanism, to reduce impact of friction box and carrier rod on their stops. This connection is by way of a second lever, also pivoted on the housing 105 and controlled by a cam, rotating with the cam 380, to bring the lever into and out of the path of dogs 397 (one shown) on rods 400 operated in a usual manner, to engage the opposite sides of the lever and retard friction box and carrier rod near the ends of their traverses.
