Abstract
787,808. Gas turbine plant. AKT.-GES. FUR TECHNISCHE STUDIEN. Jan. 28, 1955 [Feb. 8, 1954], No. 2651/55. Class 110 (3). A tanker driven by a gas turbine plant having a closed circuit in which a working medium is compressed, then heated and expanded in turbine stages driving the compressor and propeller respectively and the turbine exhaust is used to heat the compressed working medium in a heat-exchanger before being recompressed, has a sea-water heater connected in the circuit between the heat exchanger and compressor inlet to heat sea water to clean the tank or, at other times, to heat the tank. The working medium is compressed in a compressor 1, heated by the turbine exhaust gases in a heat exchanger 3 and then further heated in a heater 5. The heated compressed medium is then expanded in a turbine 7 which drives the compressor 1 and a turbine 9 which drives the ship's propeller 11 through gearing 10, 10<SP>1</SP>. The exhaust gas from the turbine 9 passes through the heat exchanger 3, a sea-water heater 12 and a cooler 13 into the suction of the compressor 1. The sea water heater 12 is used to heat sea water for cleaning or heating the tank. The air passing through the compressor 1 is cooled in two intermediate coolers 14, 15. Sea water supplied by a pump 18 is passed through the coolers 13, 14, 15 and the sea water heater 12. The heated sea water from the heater 12 may be passed through a valve 26 to tank cleaning arrangements 27 or through a valve 39 to a tank heating system 41. The discharge from the system 41 may be led to the heater 12 or discharged. Valves 23, 29, 31, 34 and 37 enable the coolers 13, 14, 15 to be placed in series or parallel with the heater 12.
