Abstract
787,514. Earth excavating apparatus. JONES OF ALDRIDGE, Ltd., C. July 11, 1955 [Jan. 25, 1955], No. 2157/55. Class 68(1) [Also in Group XXX] In an earth-excavating apparatus that can be converted for use as drag line excavator, crowd shovel, or crane there is provided means whereby positive raising and lowering of the boom when the excavator is used as a crane can be effected through the medium of a control mechanism that can be used to control the movements of a crowd shovel when the excavator is adapted for such a use. Three winch drums 14, 17 and 22 are provided, drum 14 for a boom hoist cable, drum 22 for a hook, shovel or scoop hoist cable, drum 17 for a scoop or shovel pull cable. Drum 22 can be coupled by clutch 23 to a driven shaft 21 and is always coupled by chain and sprocket drive 25, 26, 27 to drum 17, which can be idle on a driven shaft 10, be coupled to said shaft by clutch 19, or be coupled to drum 14 by clutch 15, 16. The drum 14 can be selectively coupled by clutch 9 to shaft 10, which rotates in the opposite direction to shaft 21.
