Scoop-arm machines.-A dredger comprising a loating structure carrying a turntable 5 with a oom 6 on which the scoop arm 7 is mounted and having stabilizing spuds, wire-rope operating gear, and winches has the main winch and its engine 9<a> centrally situated, the winch having a central barrel 16 for hoisting the scoop arm through a duplex rope 17, and side barrels 25, 26 for operating side spuds 3, while a separate engine and winch 11 for swinging the turntable are placed forwardly and a winch 12, and preferably the driving engine therefor; are mounted on the boom and effect inward and outward movement of the scoop arm ;; further, all the controls for these parts are placed together in one station for operation by one man. A backing rope 41 for the scoop arm is operated from a barrel 44 of the main winch. A rear spud 4 is operated by a winch 45 and a further winch 50 has a number of barrels controlling ropes 49 by which adjacent barges are manoeuvred. A duplex rope 36, Fig. 6, for thrusting the scoop arm forward passes round the end of the scoop arm and round an eye 38 secured in a recess 39. The driving means may be steam, electric or internal combustion. Compressed-air controls are provided for band clutches connecting the winches to their driving means and for brakes on the spud-hoisting barrels 25, 26. The various engines and brakes on the remaining winch barrels are controlled by levers or by compressed-air means.
