Abstract
787,460. Abrasive tools. SCATTOLIN, L., and FIGLI. May 5, 1954, No. 13034/54. Class 60. An abrasive tool for a honing machine comprises an abrasive element 1 which is encased, exclusive of the working surface 3, in a non- metallic casing 2 having resistance to wear by abrasion appreciably less than that of the inserted element, and having a low resilience such that the casing never extends beyond the working face of the abrasive element. The abrasive element 1 may be natural or artificial. The casing 2 is of enamel or plastic and resinous substances either natural or artificial, e.g. synthetic phenolic resin preferably mixed with loading materials and preferably containing abrasive material. The working surface 3 of the element 1 is finished level with the casing 2 on a curve corresponding to the minimum diameter to which the tool is to work, for internal cylindrical surfaces, or to the maximum diameter, for external cylindrical surfaces. Initially the casing wears away more quickly than the abrasive element; after a short time, wear is taken up by the abrasive element only until the casing is again reached, whereupon the process is repeated. Specifications 375,980, 623,629 and U.S.A. Specifications 1,872,667 2,467,094 are referred to.
