Abstract

The invention comprises diphenyl-[piperidyl-(3)]-carbinol, and acid addition salts thereof, and the preparation thereof by reacting a lower alkyl ester of nipecotic acid with phenyl magnesium halide and hydrolysing the product so formed, or by catalytically reducing diphenyl-[pyridyl-(3)]-carbinol in acidic alcoholic medium with hydrogen in the presence of a platinum dioxide catalyst, e.g. Adan's platinum dioxide catalyst, and when salts are required treating the diphenyl - [piperidyl - (3)] - carbinol with an acid. Suitable acids for the salt formation step are inorganic acids such as hydrochloric, hydrobromic, hydriodic, nitric, phosphoric, sulphuric, perchloric, silicotungstic, chloroplatinic and Reinecke's acid, and organic acids such as acetic, citric, malic, maleic, tartaric, glycolic, levulinic, ethane-sulphonic and d-camphor-sulphonic acid. In the examples, the dl-free base is prepared by both of the methods referred to above, and is converted into the hydrochloride, d-tartrate, l-tartrate, l-malate, oxalate and nitrate salts.
