Abstract

The invention comprises substituted phenols of the general formula <FORM:0763406/IV(b)/1> wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and Z represents oxygen or a methylene group, and acid addition salts thereof, and the preparation thereof by reacting piperidine or morpholine or their 2-methyl- or 3-methyl derivatives respectively, or an acid addition salt of any of these compounds, with 5-hydroxy-indane in the presence of formaldehyde and, if necessary, treating the product with an acid. The process may be modified in that the N-ethoxymethyl-derivatives of piperidine or morpholine, or an acid addition salt thereof, may be used in the above reaction whereupon the presence of formaldehyde is not necessary. The reaction may be carried out in an inert solvent, e.g. ethanol or isopropanol. Acids from which the salts may be derived are hydrochloric and maleic acids. In the examples 6 - piperidinomethyl -, dl - 6 - (21 - methyl-piperidinomethyl) -, 6 - morpholinomethyl - and dl - 6 - (31 - methyl - morpholinomethyl) - 5 - hydroxy-indane, and acid addition salts thereof, are prepared.
