Abstract

Piperidine and piperidine salts are prepared by hydrogenating pyridine and pyridine salts respectively in the presence of rhodium. The process may be carried out at atmospheric temperature or above and at atmospheric pressure or pressures up to 125 p.s.i. When pyridine is hydrogenated the process may be carried out without a solvent but when a salt is hydrogenated an inert solvent, e.g. an alcohol, ether, ester or water, is desirably used. The catalyst may be finely divided rhodium alone or supported on a conventional support. The pyridine salts may be prepared in situ from pyridine and the corresponding acid. Among the piperidine salts mentioned as products are salts of oxalic, phosphoric, hydrochloric, m-hydroxybenzoic, salicylic, benzoic, lactic, succinic, acetic, tartaric and adipic acids.
