Abstract

786,324. Attaching blankets to impression cylinders. LEVEY CO., Inc., F. H. April 16, 1956 [April 22, 1955], No. 11514/56. Class 100(2) A mechanism for securing and adjusting the blanket about the periphery of a blanket cylinder used in offset printing comprises two blanket-holding rollers mounted in face-plates fixed to, and forming part of the peripheral surface of the cylinder, in such a manner that the peripheral surfaces of the rollers bear against the inner surfaces of the respective face plates, each roller being provided with a longitudinal slot adapted to receive a metal strip secured to an end of, and extending beyond the edge of, the blanket, and with means for latching the extending edge of the metal strip in the slot in the roller. Face-plates 5 are attached to the cylinder 1 by screws 7, and house the rollers 9. The rollers 9 are supported by journals 10 rotatably mounted on bearer rings 11 which are secured to the supporting shaft of the cylinder. The rollers 9 have portions of reduced diameter extending through the bearer rings 11 on which are fixed worm gears 13 which co-operate with worms 14. The worms 14 are provided with portions 16 which co-operate with a wrench so that the rollers may be adjusted. The blanket is composed of a sheet of rubber 19 and an underlying felt 20 and is attached to a metal strip at each edge,. the strip being greater in length than the width of the blanket. The strip fits in slots 22 in the rollers 9 and is held in position by slip collars 23 which are mounted over that part of the rollers 9 and metal strip which projects beyond the blanket. In a second embodiment (Figs. 6-9, not shown) the rollers 9 are fitted into a space milled into the surface of the blanket cylinder, the worm gears being fixed to the rollers 9 by axially extending screws. The worm gears and worms are enclosed within recessed bores in a housing constituting a longitudinal extension beyond the bearer ring 11 at each end of the cylinder 1.
