Abstract

786,302. Lifting jacks; load handling machines. ALEXANDER, L. F. June 25, 1956 [July 6,1955], No. 19464/55. Class 78 (3). A jack for lifting one end of a bed comprises a rectanguar base frame on which are mounted two tubular columns 9, Fig. 4, supporting a headpiece 10, and two load-engaging members 19 movable on the columns by a handle 35. The headpiece contains a shaft 13, Fig. 2, driven by a worm reduction gear from the handle and carrying a sprocket 15 at each end. Endless chains connect sprockets 15 to sprockets 17 in the base, one run of each chain passing inside a tube 9, the other carrying a member 19 comprising a pair of plates connected by a block 22 carrying pins 23 which engage the chain 16 and by rollers 20, 21 which engage the tube 9. The lower sprockets are mounted in slots and carry eccentrics 28 to enable the chains to be tensioned. Guards 39 protect the bedclothes, and a fixed handle 38 (Fig. 1, not shown) allows the device to be moved on wheels 8 when not in use. According to the Provisional Specification the shaft 13 is turned directly by the handle, a pawl and ratchet holding device being provided.
