Abstract
A process for decomposing alkali metal amalgams in a short-circuited denuder cell in which the amalgam acts as anode and is brought into contact simultaneously with water and with the cathodes, comprises subjecting the cathodes to a rapid oscillatory motion, e.g. periodically, by means of electromagnetic vibrators. The cathodes may be grids floating on the amalgam, vibrators being attached to some of the grids and receiving current either by brushes contacting iron supply bars fixed along the sides of the cell, or by the cell body. Alternatively, the vibrators may be carried by the cell and periodically made to contact the grids, e.g. each vibrator may be mounted on a hollow vertical shaft passing through the lid of the cell whereby the vibrators may be lowered at will, or the field windings of the vibrators may be mounted on the lid internally or externally, the cores being fixed to or resting on the appropriate cathodes.
