Abstract

<PICT:0951253/C3/1> An electrolytic cell for producing an alkali and/or alkaline earth metal comprises a fused salt bath 10, e.g. NaCl and CaCl2, and a nonconducting impermeable screen 7, e.g. of porcelain, the lower end of which lies lower than the lower end of either of the electrodes 3, 4 which are separated by the screen 7. The anode 4 may be cylindrical and coaxial with both the cathode 3 and the screen 7, as shown, the purpose of the screen being to impose a nonlinear path on the current lines between the electrodes 3, 4. A rotating cathode may be employed, deposited metal being removed by a doctor blade, and the metal is removed at 13. A heater is incorporated in a base 8. It is stated that a cathode of fused metal may be used.
