Abstract
785,234. Pit props. GERLACH, H. March 4, 1955 [March 22, 1954, April 15, 1954, April 20, 1954. May 8, 1954, Aug. 9, 1954, Jan. 10, 1955], No. 6484/55. Class 20(2) In a telescopic pit prop having a prop lock 3 frictionally clamping a prop part. 1 to another prop part 2, the friction contact surfaces of the steel prop lock have inserts 6 of a different material and smaller area from that of the lock. As the prop telescopes under roof pressure the inserts are smeared between the friction surfaces and act as a lubricant. The inserts may be a copper alloy e.g. a copper, silicon, manganese alloy, and may be deposited as welding beads in the presence of protesting gas. Two wedges 4 clamp the tapering inner member 1 through a spacer 5. In a modification a angle wedge is used and a vertical sliding wedge is used between the spacer 5 and the inner member.
