Abstract
784,867. Waveguides. RAYTHEON MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 23, 1954 [Sept. 24, 1953 ; Oct. 19, 1953], No. 27566/54. Class 40 (8). [Also in Group XL (a)] A periodic delay line for a travelling-wave tube is composed of U-shaped elements 14, 14<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, attached at their free ends to a common base plate 11 ; the electron stream moves in a path to one side of the elements. The elements may be solid or hollow for the circulation of cooling fluid and may be of circular, square or triangular cross-section. Straps 15, 15<SP>1</SP> interconnect alternate elements. The straps are slotted where elements not connected to them pass over, or may consist of loops 15, Fig. 4. The straps may be located internally or externally of the elements. Flat plates 60, Fig. 4, may be attached to the surfaces of the elements 14, 14<SP>1</SP> facing the electron stream, or the surfaces may be machined flat. With elements of triangular cross-section, Fig. 11, flat sides face the electron stream and the opposite apices fit into grooves 117 in the straps. The elements may extend across an open wall of a rectangular waveguide 160, Fig. 13. Each side wall 162, 163 of the guide has alternate projecting portions 168 with slots into which the elements 112 fit and arcuate slotted portions 166. The structure may be used in travelling-wave tube amplifiers or oscillators with or without a transverse magnetic field (see Group XL (a)). Attenuation may be provided by coating elements with graphite or by constructing to elements of high-loss material such as iron.
