Abstract

984,578. Travelling-wave tubes. M-O VALVE CO. Ltd. April 30, 1963 [May 4, 1962], No. 17340/62. Heading H1D. A travelling wave tube comprises an interaction circuit 1, Fig. 2, having at least two slow wave structures which extend alongisde each other and along which electromagnetic waves are arranged to be propagated, each slow wave structure being formed by a sequence 3 of hollow waveguide sections arranged end-to-end with their axes parallel to one another and with each adjacent pair of waveguide sections coupled together and in non-alignment and each section having substantially parallel end walls 15 arranged perpendicular to the axis of the section and having apertures 17 for the passage of an electron beam. The arrangement is such that in operation each slow wave structure has one electron beam passing therethrough and each electromagnetic wave interacts with at least two electron beams and each electron beam interacts with at least two electromagnetic waves in such a manner that the waves are locked together in a fixed phase relationship with respect to each other as they are propagated along the interaction circuit. The interaction circuit may contain six slow wave structures and may be of generally cylindrical form having a cylindrical outer wall through which six waveguide output ports 29 extend. Adjacent sections of the slow wave structures overlap each other over a relatively narrow region containing coupling apertures 18. The interaction circuit may be cooled by the provision of a cooling tube wound around the outer cylindrical wall.
