Abstract
784,600. Electric toasters. PROCTOR ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 13, 1955, No. 29154/55. Class 39(3) An electric heating unit for an electric bread toaster comprises a resistance heating element mounted against the face of a sheet of insulation backed by a pad or mat of glass wood fibres. As described, the toaster comprises two vertical bread wells defined by two outer heating units and a central heating unit, each of the outer heating units 14 consisting of an open metal frame 16 having a side member 19 secured, e.g. welded, to top and bottom channel members 17, 18 to which a side 20 is connected by means of spring elements 21, 22. Insulating strips 23, 24 held in place by fingers 27, 28 of the metal sides 19, 20 extend beyond the metal sides and are notched to receive a heating element 29, preferably of corrugated metal ribbon, one end of the element being secured at 30 to the frame 16 and the other being secured to a terminal 31 insulated from the frame. A pad 40 of glass wool enclosed in glass cloth 41 is clamped in the channel members 17, 18 and forms a backing for the heating element, metal strips 42, 43 serving to hold the backing in contiguous relation to the heating element. The frame 16 is supported in, and electrically insulated from, the toaster casing by porcelain bushings which engage metal tabs formed on the frame. The spring elements 21, 22 cause the runs of the heating element to be held taut despite their expansion on heating, and touching of adjacent wires or shorting of the wires on the metal casing is thus avoided. A central heating unit, Fig. 9, has a heating element with runs on both faces of a glass pad and envelope 65, 66, the element being supported on pairs of insulating strips 57 at each side of a metal frame 47.
