Abstract
784,084. Valves. BLAKEBOROUGH & SONS, Ltd., J. Sept. 19, 1955 [Sept. 27, 1954], No. 27791/54. Class 135. An axial flow lift valve comprises an axially movable hollow cylindrical plunger 33 with a conical or similarly tapered portion 37 detachably secured to its downstream end, the plunger co-operating with an annular seat which is divided to form two rings 17, 21, each of which is rigidly connected to the valve casing and one, 21, of which can be detached from the valve casing to permit subsequent detachment of the conical portion 37, whilst the other ring 17 maintains sealing engagement with the main part of the plunger. The ring 17 is supported in an end cover 13 formed with radial ribs 25 supporting a bearing 27 in which the plunger slides. The rings 17, 21 form a continuous seating surface 23 and likewise sealing rings 35, 39 secured to the main plunger 33 and the conical portion 37 respectively form a continuous valve facing. When the ring 21 and the conical portion 37 have been detached, the rings 17, 35 are held in sealing engagement by bolts passing through one or more angle brackets into the holes normally occupied by securing bolts 37a. A housing 29 with a domed end 31 is bolted to the bearing 27 and housed within the main casing 11. The conical portion 37 has a detachable nozzle 43 and a nosepiece 45 formed with a seat for a pilot valve 61. The valve may be operated by any convenient means but, as shown, is operated by an axially movable rod 49 having screw-threads 63, 67 of opposite hand at its ends. The threaded part 67 is mounted in an axially fixed nut 69 rotated through a shaft 75 and bevel gearing 71, 73 by an electric motor or manually by a crank. The screwed part 63 is mounted in a nut 65 supported from the nozzle, the arrangement of the screw threads being such that the pilot valve closes after the main valve. The interior of the plunger 33 receives a throttled supply of water from the inlet through a pipe 83 fitted with a stop valve 85.
