A gas turbine engine flame tube formed by annular walls 10, 11 is axially movable relative to a fixed annular member 25 carrying fuel nozzles 26 so as to vary the size of the apertures defined between the member 25 and walls 10, 11 and thus to vary the quantity of primary combustion air flowing therethrough. At the same time the quantity of cooling air flowing to the spaces between walls 10, 11 and casings 12, 13, respectively, is varied. Some of the cooling air flows through outlets 15, 16 to the turbine. The axial movement of the flame tube is effected by a mechanism including a shaft 23 rotating a gear 21 threaded on a screw 20 attached to the flame tube by an arm 19, the gear 21 engaging also an outer ring gear 22 supported on rollers 22a. The ring gear meshes with further gears 21 on screws 20 spaced around the flame tube. The upstream ends of the flame tube walls 10, 11 are connected by spaced struts 24 engaging slots in the fixed member 25 to guide the tube. The downstream ends of the walls 10, 11 slidably engage casings 12, 13 through shoes 18. Movement of the flame tube may be controlled manually or in response to the fuel supplied. The construction is applicable also to angularly spaced cylindrical flame tubes mounted within a common annular casing or within individual casings.
