Abstract

Glycol sulphite is produced by causing ethylene oxide and sulphur dioxide to react on each other in the liquid phase at a temperature of 50 DEG to 170 DEG C., preferably 130-170 DEG C., in the absence of catalysts. The reactants are preferably used in equimolar amounts. Pressures of 4 to 25 excess atmospheres are necessary to maintain the reactants in the liquid phase. Gaseous sulphur dioxide may be passed into cooled liquid ethylene oxide whereupon an addition compound is formed which is then exposed to 50 DEG to 170 DEG C. in a pressure vessel. In an example, ethylene oxide and sulphur dioxide are introduced in the liquid phase under pressure into a pressure coil at 140 DEG C. Premixing of ethylene oxide and sulphur dioxide heats the mixture to 50-70 DEG C. before entry into the coil. The product is pure glycol sulphite.
