Abstract
783,421. Wet presses of paper-making machines &c. BOWATER RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO., Ltd., [formerly BOWATERS DEVELOPMENT & RESEARCH, Ltd.]. May 5,1955 [May 5, 1954], No. 13148/54. Class 96. The upper roll 4 of a wet press 4, 5 of a paper-making machine &c. is supported at each end by a lever 6 pivoted at 7 to the machine frame, and at 8 to a rod 33, the upper end of which is secured to a diaphragm clamped between two halves 26, 27 of a casing 25, so that compressed air supplied at 42 to the upper compartment of the housing 25 increases, and compressed air supplied at 44 to the lower compartment decreases the pressure at the nip of the press. To raise the roll 4, e.g. for renewing the felt 3, worm gearing in a housing 12 is driven by a motor (not shown) to raise the rod 33 until the top of the rod abuts a stop on the half-casing 26 after which the casing moves upwardly with the rod. Protective metal bellows 52 are provided at the base of the housing 12. A blow roll 11 is also moved upwardly &c. with the press roll 4 &c. In modifications: (1) the upper press roll 4 is supported from bell-crank levers, and compressed air is applied to either of two diaphragms for each lever, to move its upper end horizontally; and (2) the mechanism is similar to that of modification (1), but provides vertical diaphragm movement. It is suitable for fitting to existing machines.
