Abstract

In a liquid homogeneous nuclear reactor a safety overflow system consists of an auxiliary container, connected to the main reactor vessel, both vessel and container being contained within the reactor reflector. When the reactor rate of operation rises above a predetermined level the liquid solvent is decomposed by irradiation to form a gas which urges a part of the fuel solution into the auxiliary container, thereby reducing the fissionable mass in the reactor below the critical value. To restore normal operation of the reactor, the overflow fuel in the container may subsequently be returned to the reactor by a gas bubble pump. During normal operation, the gases generated in the reactor are moved through a vent in the reactor vessel by a gaseous carrier medium pumped into the upper part of the vessel through the auxiliary container. The fissionable material consists of a uranyl salt, enriched with U-235, dissolved in the moderator, water or heavy water. The control rods are boron or cadmium and the pressure vessel a stainless steel sphere.
