904,331. Controlling reactors. KERNREAKTOR BAU-UND BETRIEBS-G.m.b.H. Dec. 16, 1958, No. 40611/58. Class 39 (4). A body of neutron absorber is floated in a standpipe in a moderator space, either in a liquid moderator, or in a separate liquid. Fig. 1 shows a closed float d in a pipe c, the liquid level in the pipe being controlled by a vacuum line g or by the rate of flow of liquid through the pipe. Fig. 2 shows a float open at the bottom and containing gas (e.g. He) under pressure from a line k. Alternatively, the float may have an open top, the depth of immersion being controlled by filling with liquid. Release of vacuum or pressure, or draining of liquid, causes emergency shut-down. Float guides, position indicators, and shock absorbers may be fitted. Radiolytic gases, produced for example from H 2 O or D 2 O moderator, are removed from floats and pipes by flushing with He.
