Abstract
782,933. Waveguides. SHORT BROS. & HARLAND, Ltd. March 14, 1956 [March 23, 1955], No. 8499/55. Class 40 (8). [Also in Groups XXXII and XL (c)] Means for supporting a waveguide 10 against distortion, comprises two systems of cushions 11, 12, of which at least one system is hydrostatic, arranged respectively along opposite sides of the object 10, the cushions in each system being located at closely spaced intervals throughout the length of the object 10, the hydrostatic cushions being inter-connected to permit transference of liquid throughout the system. As shown, the object 10 is a waveguide having laterally extending flanges 101, 101. Each flange 101 is supported between an upper and a lower row of liquid-filled bellows units, interconnected by respective upper and lower conduits 15. The latter are connected to a reservoir 17 in which the liquid is pressurized by a spring-loaded piston 16. Each bellows is connected with its associated conduit 15 by a restricted orifice 151 which has a damping action. Any or all of the bellows of one of the rows acting on the associated flange 101 may be replaced by coiled springs. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) there are four flanges 101 projecting diagonally from each corner of the waveguide 10. Each flange is acted on by two opposed rows of bellows as before. In a further modification (Fig. 4, not shown) there are two flanges 101 disposed as in Fig. 1, and supported by an upper row of coil springs and a lower row of bellows. There are two additional rows of bellows acting in a horizontal direction respectively on bearing surfaces provided at the outer ends of the flanges 101. The bellows 11 may be replaced by piston and cylinder devices (Fig. 5, not shown). The invention is also applicable to supporting aerials.
