Storing and transporting apparatus comprises a number of unconnected wheeled platforms 12 travelling in one direction on a substantially horizontal track 2 and in the opposite direction on a similar track 1 disposed below it, projections 15 on the side of each platform which are engaged by propelling means 13, curved guides 8, 24 arranged between the ends of the upper and lower tracks and the equivalent 16, 17 of an articulated parallelogram system co-operating therewith to transfer the platforms from one track to the other without inversion. The upper track 2 is interrupted at 3, 4 and 31, 4<SP>1</SP> and the spaces 3, 4 are bridged by auxiliary rails 5, 6. The spaces 3, 31, 4, 41 are of sufficient length to allow the rollers 10, 10<SP>1</SP> to pass through them but to obstruct the rollers 9, 9<SP>1</SP>. The rollers 10, 10<SP>1</SP> run only on the track 2, but the rollers 9, 9<SP>1</SP> are longer and travel on the rails 5, 6 as well. The platforms are transferred from one run to the other by arms 16, 17 fixed to gears 37 ... 40 and 37<SP>1</SP> . . . 401. The ends of the arms are bifurcated to engage the rollers of the platforms. In a modification single arms are used to transfer the platforms. In another modification the track consists of three rails and the transferring means consists of at least one pair of arms, or coaxial wheels, and at least one eccentric arm or wheel disposed in such a way as simultaneously to engage each platform at three points.
