Abstract
782,184. Pipe joints. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 7, 1955 [Oct. 7, 1954], No. 28900/54. Class 99(1). In a joint between two members 11, 12 closely fitted together for relative angular movement, one of the members being, for example, a rotating arm in a centrifugal, instrument-testing apparatus, passages 32, 21 for fluid under pressure extend through the members and into a chamber 20, and passages 24, 25 extending through the member 11 connect an outlet 26 with leakage chambers 22, 23 one at each side of the chamber 20. As shown, the member 12 is shaped like a dumb-bell having a stem 13 which fits inside the member 11 and ends 14, 15 which bear on flat faces 17, 18, the areas of contact being made discontinuous by providing grooves 28 ... 31. Channels in the stem 13 provide the chambers 20, 22, 23, the passage 21 connects the chamber 20 to an outlet 33 whereby fluid is supplied to the apparatus and a passage 27 connects a return inlet 34 to the chamber 22, from which the fluid passes to a reservoir. Any fluid leaking from the chamber 20 past the grooves 28, 29 passes into the chambers 22, 23 and so to the outlet 26. Additional leakage chambers separated from the chambers 22, 23 by grooved areas may be provided.
