Abstract

A friction material for application to pulleys comprises a synthetic elastomer, a plasticizer, electrically conducting carbon black in amount to impart sufficient electrical conductivity to reduce electrostatic charges, and a grit to impart non-slip characteristics. Specified elastomers are polychloroprene, polyvinyl chloride, and vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer with or without a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer. The specified plasticizer is tritolyl phosphate with or without minor proportions of other plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate or sebacate or di-octyl adipate. Specified grits are finely divided quartz, slate flour or silica. Compounding ingredients such as fillers, processing aids, anti-ageing and vulcanizing agents, e.g. zinc oxide, calcined magnesia, phenyl-beta-naphthylamine, stearic acid and china clay may also be present.
