Abstract

781,819. Hinges and pivots. AMERICAN OPTICAL CO. July 25, 1955. No. 21485/55. Class 65(2) [Also in Group XX] In a temple hinge for a spectacle frame, resilient, compressible, hard-wearing, non- metallic material is compressed against the sides of the aligned apertures of the hinge ears to provide a small amount of friction. The material, which is preferably nylon, is in the form of a tubular bushing 28, 30 or a solid cylinder 61. The internal diameter of the bushing is less than the external diameter of a metallic pivot pin with which it is assembled and the external diameter is substantially the same as the internal diameter of the apertures in the hinge ears. As shown in Fig. 2, the shank portion 26 of screw 22 expands bushing 28 as the screw is driven home and the portion 22a of the screw is subsequently removed. In Fig. 3, metallic cylindrical member 31 is a sliding fit in bushing 30 and is expanded on pushing stud 33 home. The nylon cylinder 61 preferably has a tapered lead-in portion 62 and is slightly larger than the holes provided for it. In one form (Fig. 6, not shown) the bushing is divided longitudinally into three segments corresponding to the three hinge ears.
