847,439. Hinges and pivots. AMERICAN OPTICAL CO. April 30, 1958 [Dec. 11, 1957], No. 13822/58. Class 65(2). In a hinge for an ophthalmic mounting a plastics bushing 24 fitted on the pivot 22 and having an initial outer diameter such as to intimately fit within the aligned apertures in the hinge ears 17, 17a, 18, 18a is compressed endwise when the pivot is screwed into the smaller threaded aperture 25 in the hinge ear 18b and expands into frictional engagement with the inner side walls of the aligned apertures. The bushing is compressed between the upper surface of the ear 18b and the lower surface of a shoulder 21b on the pivot head, and the material of the bushing, which is preferably nylon, is forced inwardly into the adjacent threads 23 of the pivot and outwardly to form a flange 27 between the shoulder and the base of a counterbore 26 formed in the ear 18. The degree of friction obtained can be controlled by adjusting the initial length of the bushing. Specification 781,819 is referred to.
