Abstract

Polyethylene surfaces are integrated with vinyl-type resins by rendering the surfaces highly unsaturated in depth, e.g. by heating in a gas flame or electron bombardment in a corona discharge, coating the surfaces with the resin in a fluid condition and allowing the resin to harden in contact with the surfaces. Specified resins are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol. They may be applied, e.g. by flowing, spraying, bandcasting or rollercoating, in solution in methyl ethyl ketone or acetone, or in aqueous emulsion. The resins may contain plasticizers and other conventional additives. In examples: (IX) polyethylene tubes are coated with vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymers, and (IV) and (V) polyethylene bottles with polyvinylidene chloride.ALSO:Polyethylene surfaces are rendered highly unsaturated in depth, e.g. by heating in a gas flame or electron bombardment in a corona discharge, and integrated with vinyl-type resins by treating the surface with the resin in a fluid condition and allowing the resin to harden in contact with the surface. Specified resins are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol. They may be applied, e.g. by flowing, spraying, band-casting or roller-coating, in solution in methyl ethyl ketone or acetone, or in aqueous emulsion. The resins may contain plasticisers and other conventional additives. In examples: (IV and V) polyethylene bottles are coated with polyvinylidene chloride; IX polyethylene tubes with vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymers; (X) polyethylene coated wires with polyvinyl chloride; and (XI) laminated films are prepared by pressing regenerated cellulose films in contact with polyvinyl chloride coatings on polyethylene films.
