Abstract

Articles or films of polyethylene are surface-chlorinated to a specified extent by exposure to gaseous chlorine at or about atmospheric pressure and at temperatures between 20 DEG and 100 DEG C., and then coated with a layer of a chloroethylene polymer, defined as a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, or copolymers of vinyl and/or vinylidene chloride with vinyl acetate or acrylic acid derivatives such as methyl acrylate or acrylonitrile. The resin may be applied in solution in an organic solvent or as a latex, by spreading, brushing, dipping or spraying. The surface may be flamed before coating and the resin layer may be cured after deposition. The initial surface-chlorination is continued until the surface of the polyethylene has a combined chlorine content, based on the weight of the chlorinated article, which is an equivalent amount of surface chlorination to that of a surface-chlorinated polythene film having a thickness of 1 mil and a combined chlorine content between 1 and 30% by weight based on the weight of the chlorinated 1 mil film.
