Abstract
781,591. Method of producing smoke from sawdust. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Sept. 13, 1955 [Sept. 14, 1954; Feb. 18, 1955], Nos. 26641/54 and 4949/55. Class 81 (1). In a method of producing smoke from sawdust the latter is partially burnt or otherwise decomposed by heat as a fluidized bed. As shown, gas heated to a temperature to decompose the sawdust to produce smoke passes in the direction of the arrow 3 through a gas inlet cone 2 and the venturi throat 4, across which wire gauze 5 is secured, of a fluidization chamber 1 which is maintained about one-third filled with sawdust which has been passed through a 25-mesh British Standard sieve either by batchwise feeding or else by continuous feeding by means of a worm 7. As the sawdust enters the chamber 1 the finest particles are carried by the gas stream directly to a cyclone separator 6 without appreciable charring taking place, the remainder being maintained in a fluidized state by the gas stream whilst it is charred to produce smoke which passes via the separator to a kiln, e.g. fish smoking kiln, and the char is recovered at 8. A proportion of the gas and smoke from the kiln may be recirculated through the fluidization chamber to increase the smoke concentration. Specification 544,229 is referred to.
