Abstract

Primary C1-C8 amines are prepared by reacting the corresponding alcohols (primary or secondary) with ammonia in the presence of a hydrogen-transfer catalyst and a hydrogen-accepting substance. The latter is preferably the aldehyde or ketone corresponding to the alcohol used and may be added at the beginning or formed in situ by oxidation of the alcohol; it may be present to the extent of 5-30 per cent of the weight of the alcohol. The operating temperature may be 60-180 DEG C. Suitable catalysts are nickel, cobalt, reduced copper or a noble metal such as platinum or palladium, if desired on a support. Examples show the production of isopropylamine and butylamine from isopropanol and butyraldehyde respectively, in one case with a little di-isopropylamine as by-product.
