[Also in Group XXXV] A relay comprises a magnet core with at least two branches 1, 2, at least one coil (not shown), a pivoted armature comprising a main body 4 and at least one arm portion 5, groups of contact springs and lifting studs to lift the moving springs, the relay dimensions satisfying the equation:- where R is the length of the arm portion of the armature, L the length of the main body of the armature, (R+l) the distance between the pivot axis of the armature and the point of engagement between the armature and the lifting studs, # the maximum air gap between the armature and the core, Á the permeability of the magnetic material, Aj the cross-sectional area (b x h) of the core, b the width of the core, and (D+L 1 ) half the length of the paths of lines of force in the iron (equals a- L+C+h/2 + d/2 +L 1 ). The Specification develops the equation together with others by mathematical analyses. A relay constructed according to the equation produces a maximum contact operating force for a minimum number of ampere turns. Two examples of relays having E-shaped cores are described with reference to Figs. 7-9 and 12, 13 (not shown).
