Abstract

780,200. Spring couplings. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 11, 1955 [Aug. 12, 1954], No. 23462/54. Class 80 (2). A spring coupling, transmitting drive to aeroplane instruments &c., comprises a continuously rotating driving shaft 2 carrying a disc 1 having a tongue 5 similar to a tongue 4 on a disc 6 fast with an intermittently rotating driven shaft 11, a stressed loop spring 7 biasing the tongues &c. to the relative position shown. A pawl 9 on a stationary support is spring biased to slide on the periphery of the disc 1. A tongue 8 on the driven disc 6 is centred in a recess 3 in the periphery of the disc 1 when the shafts 1, 11 coincide angularly. The tongue 8 is engaged by the pawl 9 when it enters the recess 3, and the rotation of the driven shaft 10 is thus arrested. The driving shaft 2 continuing to turn, the disc 1 rotates against the bias of the spring 7, until the pawl 9 is cammed outwards by one of the sloped ends of the recess 3 and released from the tongue 8. The disc 6 and driven shaft 10 are then accelerated by the energy stored in the spring 7, to catch up wth the shaft 1 &c. and restore the original relative angular positions of the driving and driven shafts. More than one recess 3 may be provided in the periphery of the disc 1.
