Abstract
780,191. Valves. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. March 25, 1955 [March 26, 1954], No. 8892/54. Class 135. In a control device for a fluid system having a number of fluid supplies and for each supply a metering orifice 19, 20 defined by two pairs of parallel boundary walls, a first control means, such as a shaft 8, for varying the orifice width by effecting relative movement between the walls of one pair towards or away from each other without varying the orifice length, and a second control means, for example, a handwheel 12, for varying the orifice length by effecting relative movement between the walls of the other pair towards or away from each other without varying the orifice width, the first or second control means for the respective supplies are interconnected for simultaneous operation. Fuel enters a liner 6 via an annulus 16 and ports 18 and leaves by way of the orifice comprising ports 19, 20 in a piston 9 and the liner 6, respectively, the orifice flow area being adjustable by rotating the liner through its shaft 8 and/or sliding the piston 9 in the liner through the handwheel 12. The shafts 8 of a number of devices are interconnected by a rod, and the piston position is indicated by a pin 14 located in a slot 15 in the housing, which arrangement also prevents rotation of the piston during its translation. The ports 19, 20 may have the shape of a rectangle or parallelogram for example. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the liner is not rotatable, the degree of throttling of the metering orifice being effected by rotating and/or sliding the piston. Indication of the piston position is given by a shroud on the handwheel. In another modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the liner is again incapable of rotation but each valve has one inlet and two outlets, the sleeve and piston embodying two metering orifices each co-operating with a separate one of the outlets; the orifices are so disposed that the flow area of one diminishes as the other increases.
