Abstract

779,920. Hats. HURST, G., and CUMBERLAND PAPER CO., Ltd. Jan. 13,1956 [April 4, 1955], No. 9736/55. Class 63. A collapsible sun hat comprises a rectangular sheet 1, Fig. 5, of paper formed with pleats parallel to two opposite edges which are joined at 2, Fig. 6, to form a tube, this tube being gathered at one end by a string 3 threaded through the pleats; a two-part conical spreader 4, 6, Figs. 3, 4, is fitted to the gathered end to maintain a conical shape when the pleated tube is opened out as shown in Fig. 1. Chin ribbons 8 are stapled to the hat. The gathered end is clamped between external and internal portions 6, 4 of the spreader, these being secured together by a threaded stud and socket 5, 7. On removal of the spreader, the hat may be collapsed to an elongated bar-like package comprising two side-by-side pleated sections.
