Abstract

779,200. Hinges &c. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Oct. 25, 1954 [July 6, 1954], No. 30629/54. Class 65 (2). A motion-transmitting joint, particularly for motor-vehicle steering-gear, comprises a flanged stud 42, rotatably supported in a housing 20 secured to one member, with a shank portion secured to the other member 12, the stud being supported in a thin-walled bearing member 41 of plastics material urged into good bearing engagement with the shank of the stud by a loaded resilient mounting in the housing. The material of the bearing member is preferably such as to need no lubrication, such as nylon or polytetrafluoroethylene. In the form shown the resilient mounting is an oil-resistant rubber ring 40 and the stud 42 and bearing member 41 have out-turned flanges pressed against the ring 40 by a dished plate 33 secured in the open end of the housing and engaging a domed end of the stud; any lateral movement of the stud in the housing causes the stud to be forced downwards, compressing the ring 40 and thus resisting the movement. In a modification Fig. 2 (not shown), the stud has a cylindrical portion above the flange, embraced by a bearing member and rubber ring similar to 41, 40, the latter ring being compressed by the cover 33, which is not in contact with the stud. The space between the cover 33 and the stud may be packed with lubricant. An oilresistant rubber washer 32 is provided between the parts 20, 12.
